We all have stressful times in our lives; in these tough economic times, they may be occurring even more frequently. Worries about money, our job, our family, our health, our family's health, and other major concerns take a toll not only on our mood but they also take a toll on our bodies as well. They steal our energy and leave us feeling weak and may even make us sick.
Stress is a part of life that we all have to endure but we can help keep our bodies strong and fight off illness by eating the right foods.
I have found the best foods that are already in your cupboard and refrigerator; so reach for the ones that contain the right vitamins and minerals and you're well on your way to fighting stress and the repercussions of long-term stress on your body.
First, reach for complex carbohydrates.
Eat plenty of whole grain pastas, cereals, and breads which are loaded in complex carbs! Also load up on fruits such as bananas and leafy greens.
Also stock up on foods full of magnesium such as spinach, seeds, nuts, almonds, and whole grains.
Fruit, grains, and veggies are also rich in Vitamin B Complex which is a key component in fighting stress. So make sure you stock up on your next shopping trip.
Our bodies cannot store Vitamin C, so get your hands on fruits, their juices, and veggies such as tomatoes as soon as possible. When stress levels are high, our immune system can be compromised, especially if we're low on our Vitamin C stores as it is, and exposes us to sickness and disease. So make sure you're getting enough Vitamin C.
Pour yourself a glass of milk or dig in to some cottage cheese; calcium is essential in fighting stress because it helps our muscles relax and regulates our moods.
The Nutrition Stealers:
Caffeine
Everybody loves their coffee in the morning and a latte in the afternoon; but the fact is that caffeine can rob us of essential vitamins and nutrients, and causes us to release adrenaline, which makes us feel even more stressed than we were to start with. It is a big 'robber' of Vitamin C from our body.
Alcohol
After a tough day, who doesn't love to sit back and enjoy a beer or glass of wine? Or two or three? Sure, it tastes good and helps us relax, but it is also causes us to release adrenaline.
Sugary snacks
Sugars can give us energy for the short term but eventually just steal our energy and make us feel more tired than we were before.
So make a few adjustments in your diet, and you'll ace whatever life throws at you!
