Normally, I scoff at fad diets--they promise get-slim-quick results via unhealthy and unproven methods, whether it's special food combos, uber-calorie restriction, or supplements.

But one diet trend I've noticed lately is, happily, a healthy one: the greening of our diets with more veggies, less meat. Here are a couple of the latest diet fads you can feel good about:

Eco-Atkins: Remember the bacon-filled, steak-saturated phenomenon that was the Atkins diet? It's gone from red (as in meat) to green! Last month, a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine tested an eco-Atkins diet--one remained true to the high-protein aspect of Atkins but which included that protein from vegetables, not animals--and found that it worked just as well for weight loss as the traditional Atkins diet and kept cholesterol levels down.

Recession Dieting: You may be practicing this already and not even know it! Most of us have tightened the belt with regard to our food budget. The key is to spend our dollars wisely. In place of pricey, empty-calorie snacks and frozen dinners, people are purchasing more fruits and veggies. While fresh produce can be expensive, frozen and canned options are just as healthy. And now is the time to buy seasonal produce--it's abundant and cheaper. Instead of expensive cuts of red meat, go for cheap lean protein, like canned salmon, lentils and chicken.

Home-grown Dieting:
That's right, you grow it, you eat it! It's an automatic way to stay healthy and slim: You can't grow a Twinkie, but you can grow a tomato. Gardens are sprouting up everywhere as people are trying to save money and eat better. If don't have the time, space or know-how to grow a garden, simply purchase your food with the "garden mantra" in mind.
